Liner Notes

Earl Klugh surprises and delights. He surprised and delighted both Chick Corea and George Benson when he worked with them. He surprised and delighted the many who heard his first Blue Note album. Now, Earl has every chance to go all the way to mass acceptance with this new offering.

Now, I am not a noted visionary, but Earl, for me, has all the necessary attributes for that mass acceptance — technique, tone, idea, taste, a knowledge of what works today as well as what happened yesterday. Not too long ago Earl played an engagement at the Village Gate in New York City. The large audience was held spellbound by the beauty the guitarist created within his music.

This album has much beauty. It's also, by turns, funky, tender, warm, exciting. I don't want to single out any one performance because the overall standard is so astonishingly high. However, to give an indication of how much ground Earl can cover, note the exquisite solo performance on 'The April Fools'; then the surging soulfulness of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."

Earl Klugh surprises and delights me — that makes me feel good and I can't think of a better way to feel.
