Liner Notes
Green comes in a tot of shades: Apple...Bottle...California...and Grant.
If you own the record albums "Feelin' The Spirit," "Goin' West" and "Visions," then you already know about the shades of Grant Green. Now here are some new colors spun by the incredible St.-Louis-born guitarist. As usual, fantastic pickings.
Back-porch guitar pickin' may be all right, but the vision is sometimes limited to clothes lines and the white-washed fence. Grant Green does his pickin' on the front porch, from which he can survey the whole horizon — and all of the greens Nature and Art can spread out. At one Grant even jumps up on the roof to paint a brand new musical picture of "Sunrise, Sunset." Watch it, for right in the middle of this Broadway tune when you are least expecting it, Grant will hit you in the head with a funky cadenza. But that is like Grant Green. No cliches! Nothing borrowed! And none of that figuring out what's coming next. Instead, the jazz master lets you see and hear, from his front porch, some evergreens ("Never My Love," "Cast Your Fate To The Wind," already mentioned "Sunrise, Sunset") and some brand new greens, including Grant's own blues about "California Green." The opening medley "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing, Open Up The Door" and "Cold Sweat"' get things started.
While this is Grant's show, it is greatly enhanced by the Wade Marcus framing. The settings are imaginative and tasteful, and each is stamped with the arranging genius of Mr. Marcus. The supporting cast reads like a Who's Who in Music. The show was commissioned by George Butler, who has also provided the gallery.
So, if you like some of the greatest guitar playing some new shades of Green, add this one to your Art collection.
At my house, Grant me Green.
